JULY 27 2009. I HAVE NOW OPTIMIZED THE SITE TO ACCOMODATE MODERN RECTANGULAR SCREENS. IT IS NOW BEST VIEWED IN INTERNET EXPLORER ON A 17 INCH SCREEN. UNDER VIEW IN YOUR BROWSER WINDOW SET THE TEXT SIZE TO LARGEST. THIS IS ESSENTIAL FOR CORRECT PICTURE/TEXT ALIGNMENT

MEDIEVAL WALL PAINTING IN THE ENGLISH PARISH CHURCH

A DEVELOPING CATALOGUE

(Updated with new material September 2012)

Anne Marshall, Associate Lecturer (retired), The Open University (United Kingdom)

Late Summer Update : New pages from Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Essex. Included is a new page on the East Wall at Longthorpe Tower (which has greatly extended its opening times). All the new material can be found as usual from the What's New page. Another update later in the autumn, I hope.

Welcome. This site represents the continuing development of what may one day become a comprehensive catalogue. Vast quantities of Medieval Wall Painting have been lost forever, of course, but there is nevertheless more left on English church walls than is generally realised; paintings continue to be uncovered and more still are known to exist under layers of plaster. Some of these will come to light one day; in fact some are already doing so, as at Houghton-on-the-Hill, near Swaffham in Norfolk and Ilketshall St. Andrew in Suffolk. Both of these can be found from the Main Contents Page. Links below and above. Find everything new at this update from the Whats New Page, as above.

From the Main Site Contents Page (links to it above and at the bottom of this page) you can go to any of the other sectors of the site. The various subjects and individual paintings, Bibliography and other pages already on the site will all be found from the Main Site Contents Page.
